Cittadella

With its unique skyline and imposing military architecture, the Cittadella, is Gozo’s most important landmark which is visible from any point of the island. From this vantage point, one can enjoy sweeping views of the magical island of Gozo.

Before you have fully passed under the archway into the Cittadella, you will be welcomed by the majestic sight of Gozo’s Cathedral, dedicated to Santa Marija, across the small square at the top of a wide flight of steps guarded by two 17th-century bronze cannons. You will also see the Law Courts and the Bishop’s palace.

A walk along the fortified ramparts is rewarded with a breath-taking, 360-degree panorama of Gozo’s hills and valleys, villages and churches. When visiting the Cittadella, you will feel like you have time-travelled to the past in a way you are not likely to forget. The buildings which have high historical, architectural and military value will transport you back in time. Whilst strolling the winding streets, you will also come across the Chapel of St. Joseph and a number of holy shrines.
